Why IPTV buffers — and why it always seems to hit at the walkout
Buffering on a random Tuesday is annoying. Buffering the second a title fight starts — when you've told six people to come over — is the one that makes people quit IPTV for good. And it's no coincidence: the moment a stream fails is almost always the moment demand spikes. So instead of a long list of causes, split the problem in two: your side of the glass, and the provider's side. Nearly every freeze lives on one or the other, and telling them apart takes about two minutes.
- One channel stutters, the rest are fine → it's your side (Wi-Fi, hardware, app).
- Everything stutters at 9pm on a big night → it's their side (oversold servers).
- Cheap services fail at the walkout because that's when their under-built capacity finally gets tested — the thing we spend the most on.
The tell: which side of the glass is failing?
Picture the stream as a pipe running from the provider's servers, across the internet, to the screen in your living room. A freeze is water not arriving — and there are only two places the pipe can be blocked. Before touching a single setting, read the pattern of the buffering, because it points straight at the culprit.

Your side of the glass (where ~80% of it lives)
Uncomfortable truth: most buffering blamed on the provider is home plumbing. The connection from the street to your router is usually fine — it's the last ten metres, and the box doing the decoding, that let a stream down. In rough order of how often they're the real culprit:
- Wi-Fi, not internet. Walls, distance and the crowded 2.4 GHz band strangle a stream that needs to be steady, not fast. The single biggest fix in IPTV is an Ethernet cable to the box — see the router guide.
- Peak-time congestion. Fine at 2pm, rough at 9pm is the signature. A wired connection rides it far better; router QoS helps a shared line prioritise the TV.
- A line that's genuinely too slow. Third, not first — check the floor: ~10 Mbps per HD stream, ~25 for 4K, per screen at once. Confirm with our speed test and the full speed guide.
- Tired hardware. An old Fire Stick with ten background apps, a 2015 Smart TV. Restart it, close apps; the €30–60 upgrade in the box guide ends a lot of misery.

Their side of the glass (rare — unless the service is cheap)
With a serious provider, server-side buffering is the rarest cause. With a cut-price one, it's the whole story — and it has a very specific fingerprint: the picture is flawless for weeks, then dies on the one night you actually invited people over. That's not bad luck. Streaming a title fight means thousands of people hitting the same channel in the same ten seconds, and capacity that was "fine" all month is suddenly the only thing that matters.
This is the whole reason the price can't be €2/month. Event-night capacity is expensive to build and sits mostly idle between big cards — so the cheapest services simply don't buy it, and gamble that no title fight lands while you're a customer. When one does, they oversell, buckle, and refund. Peak-event headroom is the first thing worth asking any provider about before you pay.

The two-minute test Open a second channel. If it plays perfectly while the first freezes, stop blaming the servers — the problem is between your router and your TV, and Ethernet fixes most of it. Buffering isn't one problem, it's two — and the pattern tells you which. Wire what you can, give Wi-Fi a fair chance, and you'll clear most freezes yourself.
